Why Pancakes?

PANCAKE TUESDAY AROUND THE WORLD

Did you know that “Pancake Tuesday” or “Shrove Tuesday” is celebrated all around the world? The tradition of eating pancakes before Lent has been part of many cultures, and each has their own take on the traditional pancake. Why pancakes? In many cultures pancakes are a perfect vehicle for topping with yummy treats that are given up during the Lenten period.

  • Denmark- “Fastelavn” is the Sunday before Lent and it’s traditional to cover bakery buns with whipped cream, jam, and melted chocolate.
  • England- On the Tuesday before Lent they cover their pancakes in lemon juice and syrup.
  • Canada- It’s maple syrup, berry jam, and sausage for them! They hide coins, rings, and buttons in their pancakes. Each symbolize good fortune to come for the person who finds an item in their pancake.
  • Poland- They celebrate on the Thursday before Lent by eating only pancakes, pastries and doughnuts all day!
  • Lithuania- People dress up as devils or witches and sing and dance in public squares before walking through town begging for potato pancakes, doughnuts and money.
